Sustainable travel extends far beyond thinking about the impact of your transportation choice and the environmental impact.
While ecological impact is important, sustainable travel also encompasses social justice, economic equity, cultural sensitivity and community well-being.
It asks not just "How did I get here?" but also "What is my presence doing to this place and its people?"
For coliving spaces, fostering sustainable travel means creating environments in which guests can develop an awareness of their impact and recognise their responsibility.
It means taking the opportunity to build bridges between different realities and support behaviour change in relation to travel beyond their stay.
1. Integrate education
Run workshops on travel privilege, gentrification and local impact, or by pointing Colivers to specific resources. Check out the educational methods in this toolkit :)
2. Incentivise slow travel
Design programmes that reward longer stays over constant movement. Offer discounts for month-long commitments, create activities that encourage deeper engagement (e.g. language learning, local activities) and celebrate these moments together.
