The Travel Impact Guide was developed through a process of collaboration, testing, and reflection between SUTIL partners and six Test-Hubs across Europe. Each coliving and creative space approached the Guide not as a theory but as a practical tool — something to be adapted, tested, discussed, and brought into real-life community contexts. From this collective experimentation, we gathered a set of clear tips on how the Guide can be used meaningfully in both international and local settings.
One of the central recommendations is to introduce the Guide gradually and contextually. Rather than presenting all concepts at once, coliving hosts and educators found it useful to start with simple reflections — for example, understanding one’s travel expectations, the “mental backpack,” or the local context — and only then moving into deeper topics such as sustainability, community integration, or the differences between nomads and locals. This helped participants process the content in a more personal and grounded way.
Coliving spaces in particular found that communal environments naturally support these exchanges, making the Guide not just a resource to read, but a tool for building awareness and community bonds.
The value of connecting the Guide to the local reality is also emphasized. ****Whether in rural Spain, Germany or Bulgaria the travellers can be more motivated when the Guide is linked to the surrounding context: local traditions, environmental challenges, youth initiatives, or opportunities for contribution.
The Guide is not a fixed recipe but a framework, something that can be adapted to the needs of colivings, travellers, and local communities. The key is to use it with curiosity, openness, and the understanding that small steps - deeper conversations, awareness of impacts, and community engagement - can collectively shift how we think about travel.
